Langtang Trek

The Langtang Trek is a good one for the winter months. The highest place you stay is 12500 feet and the highest you trek is 14500 feet. It is a rough eight hour bus ride from Kathmandu to  Suryabrubesi, the starting point. Day one is about a seven hour hike up to a place called Lama Hotel. Here you are still in the trees and the valley is narrow and dark. The next day is about seven hours and brings you to the rebuilt village of Langtang . In 2015 a huge earthquake and slide destroyed two thirds of the town killing about forty tourists and and about a hundred locals.
The next day is a short three hours to the town of Kyanjing Gompa. It is an incredibly picturesque place surrounded by massive mountains and glaciers.
By this time both of us are whacked out from the altitude and we both have coughs and running noses. I have misgivings about our hike tomorrow up a ridge to a famous view point. It is a measly two thousand feet of elevation gain. The secret is to go slow and steady and I mean slow. After an hour and a half we stop at the top to get the mandatory selfies and enjoy the view.
